सलीम, सलमा और हेलन
‘ग्रेट शो मॅन’ राज कपूर यांची क्लासिक, अजरामर कलाकृती असलेल्या१९५१ सालच्या ‘आवारा’ या चित्रपटाचा रिमेक करायचीमनीषा ‘राज’पुत्र ऋषी कपूर यांनी व्यक्त केली अन् गेल्या आठवड्यात ‘बांगडू’मन ‘आवारा’च्या ‘फ्लॅशबॅक’मध्ये चांगलेच बागडून, हुंदडून आले. ‘आवारा’मध्ये हेलनने भूमिका केली होती’, असा उल्लेख गत आठवड्यातील ‘संदर्भछटा’ मध्ये मी केला होता. या उल्लेखावर अनेक चित्रपट रसिकांचे मला फोन खणखणलेत.‘‘हेलन या चित्रपटात नव्हती...तेव्हा हेलन कशी असेल हो?...एक दोन तीन आजा मौसम है रंगीन...दॅट वॉज कुकू; नॉट हेलन...’’ अशा आशयाचे ते फोन होते. कुकू ‘आवारा’त होती, हे त्यांचे म्हणणे बरोबर होते. मात्र, हेलन या चित्रपटात नव्हती, हे त्यांचे म्हणणे चूक होते. ‘आवारा’च्या स्टार कास्टमध्ये हेलनचे नाव आहे. मात्र, चित्रपटात ती कुठे झळकत नाही. याचे उलगडलेले गुपित असे की, ‘आवारा’मध्ये हेलन होती, पण सोलो डान्सर म्हणून नव्हे; तर कोरस डान्सर म्हणून! नर्तकींच्या समूहात हेलन होती व तिला हे काम कुकूनेच मिळवून दिले होते. आवारात नर्तकींच्या समूहात हेलनला घेण्यासाठी कुकूनेच नृत्यदिग्दर्शक बद्रीप्रसाद यांच्याकडे तिच्या नावाची शिफारस केली होती. याच कालावधीत हेलनने मणिपुरी, भरतनाट्यम् कथ्थक यासारख्या शास्त्रीय नृत्याचे धडे घेतले. मांजरीसारखे डोळे, पसरट हास्य आणि अतिशय लवचिकपणे, सळसळत्या अंगाने खास शैलीतले, बिनधास्त नृत्य...अशी हेलनची खासियत राहिली. पाच दशकांच्या लंऽऽब्या सिनेकारकिर्दीत हेलनने तब्बल पाचशेपेक्षा जास्त चित्रपटांतून भूमिका केलेल्या आहेत. हेलनचे मूळ नाव हेलन रिचर्डसन अर्थात ख्रिश्‍चन! जन्माने म्यानमारची असलेली हेलन दुसर्‍या महायुद्धाच्या काळात भारतात आली होती. तेव्हा तिची आर्थिक स्थिती हलाखीची होती अन् आई साधी नर्स होती. पैशाअभावी तिला शिक्षण सोडावे लागले होते. मात्र, नृत्याची तिला आवड होती. ५८ साली ‘हावडा ब्रिज’ या चित्रपटातील ‘मेरा नाम चिन चिन चू’ या गाण्यावरील नृत्याने हेलनला मोठी प्रसिद्धी लाभली‘ओ हसीना जुल्फोंवाली जाने जहॉं...’या नासिर हुसेन यांच्या ‘तिसरी मंझिल’ या रहस्यपटामधील गीतावर शम्मीकपूर सोबत हेलनने सुंदर नृत्य केले होते. या गाण्यात ‘रॉकी द बॅण्ड’ वाला ड्रमसेट वाजविणारा जो अभिनेता दिसतो; तो दुसरा तिसरा कुणीच नाही; तर सलिम खान आहेत.

दिग्दर्शक प्रेम नारायण अर्थात पी. एन. अरोरा यांच्याशी झाले होते. ‘दिल
दौलत दुनिया’,‘सिंदबाद अलिबाबा ऍण्ड अलाद्दिन’,‘खजांची’, ‘नीलोफर’,
‘हूर-ए-अरब’, ‘चोर बाजार’, ‘रेल का डिब्बा’ या सात चित्रपटांचे दिग्दर्शन,
तर ‘दिल दौलत दुनिया’, ‘खजांची’,‘लैला मजनू’,‘पारस’ या चार चित्रपटांची
निर्मिती अरोरा यांनी केली होती. अरोरा हे हेलनपेक्षा वयाने खूप मोठे होते.
अरोरांचा जन्म १२ जून १९१२ रोजी पाकिस्तानमधील क्वेट्टाचा, तर हेलनचा जन्म
२१ नोव्हेंबर १९३९ चा! म्हणजे दोघांमध्ये तब्बल २७ वर्षांचे अंतर होते.

होती. या दोघांचे लग्न झाले. अरोरा यांच्याशी काही वर्षे सुरळीत

लागलेत. १७ वर्षांच्या संसारानंतर हेलनने १९७४ साली अरोरा यांना घटस्फोट
दिला. यानंतर हेलनची अवस्था दिवाळखोरीसारखी झाली होती. तिच्याकडे तेव्हा ना
पैसा उरला होता ना काम! अशा स्थितीत तिला आधाराची गरज होती. ‘तशी आधाराची
गरज प्रत्येकालाच असते... आपली मान कुणाच्या तरी खांद्यावर ठेवून भावूक
होण्यासाठी...रडण्यासाठी!’हेलनही याला अपवाद नव्हती, तिलाही आधाराची गरज
होतीच. परंतु वाईट दिवसांत बॉलीवूडचा एकही बंदा तिच्या मदतीला पुढे आला
नाही. फक्त एका व्यक्तीने तिला आधार दिला. ती व्यक्ती होती लेखक-पटकथाकार
सलीम खान! सलिम हे इंदूरहून १९५८ साली अभिनेता बनण्यासाठी मुंबईला आले
होते. हेलनशी त्यांची पहिली भेट १९६३ साली ‘काबली खान’ या चित्रपटाच्या
सेटवर झाली होती. या भेटीच्या वेळी हेलन ‘डान्सिंग क्वीन’ म्हणून नावारूपास
होती व ती प्रगतीचे उंच झोके घेत होती, तर सलीम हे फ्लॉप अभिनेते होते.
तेव्हा ‘स्ट्रगलर’ म्हणूनच त्यांचा प्रवास सुरू होता. पहिल्या भेटीतच सलीम
हेलनच्या प्रेमात पडले होते. मात्र, हेलनच्या मनात होते चित्रपट
निर्माते-दिग्दर्शक पी. एन. अरोरा! अरोरा हेदेखील हेलनच्या सौंदर्याच्या
भुरळात दिवाने बनले होते. अरोरा यांनी आपल्या सात चित्रपटांमध्ये हेलनला
घेतले होते, यावरून हेलनवर ते किती जीव ओवाळून टाकत होते, याची प्रचीती
येते. ‘हेलनच्या मनात अरोरा आहे आणि त्यांचा जांगडबुत्ता पक्क्यात आहे,’ हे
सलीम यांना समजल्यानंतर त्यांच्या एकतर्फी प्रेमाचा भंग झाला व त्यांनी
स्वत:च्या मनाची समजूत स्वत:च काढली. यानंतर १९५९ साली सलिम खान यांना
सुशीला चरक नामक अतिशय देखण्या व लाजाळू युवतीवर प्रेम जडले. सुशीला ही
हिंदू म्हणजे महाराष्ट्रीयन राजपूत होती, तर सलीम हेदेखील देखणेच होते व
त्यातही ते चांगल्या स्वभावाचे होते. त्यामुळे दोघांचीही मनं जुळली. तब्बल
पाच वर्षे ते सुशीलाला ‘चुपके चुपके’ भेटत राहिले. यानंतर सलीम यांनी
सुशीलाशी लग्न करण्याचा निर्धार केला व कुटुंबीयांना आपली इच्छा सांगितली.
मात्र, सलीम यांच्या या निर्णयाला त्यांच्या कुटुंबीयांनी कडाडून विरोध
केला. सलिम यांनी हा विरोध झुगारून सुशीलासोबत १९६४ साली लग्न केले.
मुस्लिम माणसाशी लग्न केल्याने महाराष्ट्रीयन सुशीला मग बेगम सलमा बनली.
दोघांचेही एकमेकांवर जिवापाड प्रेम होते. लग्नानंतर त्यांना सलमान, अरबाझ,
सोहेल ही तीन मुले आणि अल्वीरा ही मुलगी झाली. आज ही तीनही मुले
चित्रपटसृष्टी गाजवत आहेत, तर अल्वीरा ही अभिनेता-निर्माता दिग्दर्शक अतुल
अग्निहोत्री याची पत्नी आहे. अतुल अग्निहोत्री हा ‘क्रांतिवीर’मध्ये नाना
पाटेकरचा भाऊ म्हणून चमकला होता.
सलीम-सलमा यांचा सुखाचा संसार सुरू
असताना तिकडे हेलन-अरोरा यांच्या संसारात खटके उडत होते. हेलनला अरोरा हे
खूप त्रास देत होते. पुढे तिची कमाईच ते उडवत होते. तिच्यावर अनेक निर्बंध
अरोरा यांनी लादले होते. मोकळा श्‍वास घेण्यासाठी तिने अरोरा यांना घटस्फोट
दिला. १७ वर्षे संसार केल्यानंतर अरोरांना घटस्फोट दिला तेव्हा हेलनकडे ना

सलीम यांची लेखणी धारदार होती. पार्टनर जावेद अख्तर यांच्यासमवेत त्यांनी
१८ चित्रपट कथा तेव्हा लिहिलेल्या होत्या. अनेक निर्मात्यांशी त्यांचे
चांगले संबंध होते. सलीम यांनी अनेक चित्रपटांमध्ये हेलनला काम मिळवून
दिले. सलीम यांनी केलेली शिफारस तेव्हा कुणीच टाळत नव्हते, एवढे वजन तेव्हा
सलिम यांचे होते. ‘जंजीर’, ‘शोले’,‘डॉन’ यासारख्या हिट चित्रपटांत हेलनला
भूमिका सलीम यांच्यामुळेच मिळाल्या. यानंतर सलीम-हेलन यांच्या भेटीगाठी खूप

‘हेलनसोबत मला लग्न करायचे आहे,’ हा निर्धारही बोलून दाखविला. हे ऐकताच
सलमासह संपूर्ण कुटुंबच हादरले, तिने विरोध केला. मात्र, सलीम हे आपल्या
निर्णयावर ठाम होते. त्यांच्या निर्णयापुढे कुणाचेच काही चालले नाही.
मात्र, हेलन यांच्याशी लग्नाचा निर्णय घेताना त्यांचे दुसरे मन त्यांना खात

पुन्हा मनाचा मोठेपणा दाखवला. प्रारंभी हेलनला काही दिवस कठीण गेलेत. नंतर
मात्र सलमामुळेच तिला मानाचे स्थान मिळाले. सलमाने तिला सांभाळून घेतले.
