ISRAELI WOMAN STUMBLES UPON ROMAN BUSTS

An Israeli woman walking near ancient ruins noticed a head sticking out of the ground, leading to the uncovering of two Roman-era busts, archaeologists said on Sunday. The life-size sculptures, carved in limestone, were found in the northern city of Beit Shean earlier this month, with the Israel Antiquities Authority dating them to the late Roman period, some 1,700 years ago. The sculptures emerged north of Beit Shean’s national park, where the ruins of a Roman and Byzantine city lie, probably thanks to the recent rains.

The finder would receive a ‘certificate of appreciation’ for her good citizenship in reporting her find to the authorities rather than taking them for herself

Why tattoos digitally recreated on athletes’ avatars are a problem

When LeBron James bounds down a basketball court, he is both a transcendent athlete and a prominent palette for dozens of tattoos. His mother’s name, Gloria, rests on a crown on his right shoulder and his forearms bear a portrait of his son LeBron Jr. and 330, an area code for his hometown, Akron, Ohio.

Although those tattoos have personal connections, they may not truly be his.

Any creative illustration “fixed in a tangible medium” is eligible for copyright, and, according to the United States Copyright Office, that includes the ink displayed on someone’s skin. What many people don’t realise, legal experts said, is that the copyright is inherently owned by the tattoo artist, not the person with the tattoos.

Lawyers generally agree that an implied licence allows people to freely display their tattoos in public, including on television broadcasts or magazine covers. But when tattoos are digitally recreated on avatars in sports video games, copyright infringement can become an issue.

“Video games are an entirely new area,” said Michael A. Kahn, a copyright lawyer. “There is LeBron James, but it’s not LeBron James. It’s a cartoon version of him.”

Electronic Arts, a game developer and publisher, recreates over 100 tattoos in its FIFA and UFC games, including the colourful sleeve on the right arm of soccer star Lionel Messi and a heart-eating gorilla on fighter Conor McGregor’s chest. Yet only a handful of players in its Madden football games are depicted with their real-life ink.

Players’ unions, many of which license the players’ likenesses to video game publishers, has advised athletes to secure licensing agreements before they get tattooed. Artists have an incentive to sign rather than

pass up a client who could be a billboard for their work.

Gotti Flores said he spent at least 40 hours tattooing NFL receiver Mike Evans. He was surprised, he said, that he had to give permission for his work to be reproduced in the game. “Really it didn’t even matter to me,” said Flores, who signed a waiver for no compensation.

Not all tattoo licensing happens so amicably. At least three lawsuits have been filed against Take-Two Interactive, a game developer, and a subsidiary, 2K Games. Although video game companies already pay to license copyrighted music, they may want to avoid the cost of negotiating with hundreds of artists for rights to their tattoos.

For wedding guests, now a hair and glam touch-up at venues

The women’s bathrooms and lounges at wedding receptions are often filled with guests who are sweaty and sometimes disheveled from a long day and night of activities or a few spins on the dance floor.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a hair and makeup artist on hand to re-pin an updo, touch up eye shadow or brighten up lips? Some couples are booking beauty companies for their guests and providing other glamour-focused amenities.

“If you think about it, once you’ve been to the church, in the bus, then get to the reception and go to the restroom, that’s a lot — especially if it’s 100 degrees outside,” said Tara Guerard, an event planner and designer. She added, “If there’s someone there to fix your hair and take away your sweat, it’s awesome.”

Guerard, who runs Tara Guérard Soirée, recently started incorporating beauty bars in the ladies’ bathrooms at the receptions of weddings she organises. She collaborates with a local freelance makeup artist and hair stylist, Deidre Outlaw, who came up with the idea.

The two noted that the service is particularly successful in hot summer months or generally warm weather.

Brittany Lo, founder of Beautini, a hair and makeup business in New York City, also offers beauty amenities to guests at weddings and other social events. “People run to the bathroom every 10 dances to make sure that their makeup is in place and they don’t look like a hot mess,” Lo said. “This provides a next-level service for them: Someone else quickly does it, and then the guest runs back out to the dance floor.”

The beauty bar and allday glam squad doesn’t come cheaply, however. Hourly prices are typically $100 to $250 per stylist.

But there are less expensive ways to incorporate these ideas. Guerard likes to hand out cool towels on the dance floor during humid summer months. “All the small things are affordable, and people really appreciate the thought,” she said.

Pre-wedding skincare tips for brides-to-be!

1/7 Skincare dos and don'ts for brides-to-be!

As you get closer to your wedding day, it's important to pay attention to your skin, as it needs to look the best. If you want a radiant skin and want to have the best photos, then we have a skin care plan for you. We've charted the dos and don'ts of skincare tips to follow a few months before the big day:

2/7 Avoid invasive treatments

If you have been getting any invasive treatments, it's better you avoid them right now. From chemical peels to laser, steer clear from aggressive treatments. A lot of brides-to-be indulge in invasive treatments, which take months to show results and that's why you should avoid them during this crucial time.

3/7 Don't touch your face

If you get a pimple, just relax! Acne scars can take months to fade and that's why you must avoid pricking the pimples. Go for spot-treatments and if there is any scar left, you can use the pure form of aloe vera gel on a daily basis.

4/7 Use gentle skincare

A lot of brides-to-be indulge in expensive skincare creams, serums and what not just a few months before the wedding. However, experimenting with intensive skincare products can be a risk. Stick to gentle and natural potions.

5/7 Get your sleep

A good sleep will combat dark circles and also relive stress, which can lead to pimples. A proper sleep will keep you calm and relieved.

6/7 Reduce alchol intake

Just a few days before the wedding, try to reduce your alcohol intake. If drinking, make sure you drink enough water along with it. This way you can avoid swollen face and puffy eyes.

7/7 Go for trusted facials

If you go for a facial a few days before the big day, make sure you go for tried and tested facials. Avoid over-exfoliation and go for gentle cleansing instead. You can also indulge in face masks to get smoother and nourished skin.

A blind pimple doesn't appear on the surface on the skin. It's a bump, where the acne is formed under the skin. Such kind of a pimple is painful. The pain is caused due to the pressure the bump is causing under the skin. That's why the surface above the bump is sensitive and shouldn't be touched and pricked. You can easily feel the bump but can't see it!

2/7Why does it happen?

Such acne happens due to the build-up of bacteria and sebum. If you have large pores and oily skin, blind pimples can happen easily and also when proper cleansing is not done. The bacteria gets trapped under the pore and forms deeper down in the skin.

3/7How long do they last?

If they remain under the skin, then the acne can take months to disappear. If they start to inflame, then it might appear on the surface of the skin and can disappear easily.

4/7How to handle

Picking and squeezing will only make this kind of acne worse, so no matter what, don't touch! A blind pimple needs to be calmed and they are actually just impossible to pop. Trying to squeeze will cause pain, increase inflammation and even lead to major scarring. The best way to treat them is to visit a dermatologist. You can also try the following things to treat it at home:

5/7Try salicylic acid

The acid is known to be one the best acne fighters. It helps to dry a pimple. For blind pimples, you can use cleansers infused with this ingredient. If you have really sensitive and dry skin, use the product only on the concerned area.

6/7Calm the inflammation

If a pimple causes too much pain, then use ice therapy. Wash your face with a salicylic acid cleanser like mentioned above. After cleansing, use an ice pack 2-3 times in one hour's time. It will help to cool the area, relieve the pain and also reduce the swelling.

7/7Destroy the bacteria

You can also try benzoyl peroxide, which helps to kill the bacteria. You can try this for big cystic big pimples. However, stay cautious and use this product properly. Make sure you moisturise the area and do spot-treatment only. Also, use it less and if it stings, wash it off immediately.

Getting hitched on a budget? Here are 7 smart ways to cut down your wedding costs

The big fat Indian wedding is on a note ban diet. A year after demonetisation, the pomp is being replaced by muted and cautious ceremonies with an emphasis on digital transactions and conservative spending. According to an ET report, some of the country's renowned wedding planners, caterers, decor artists are seeing a 30-40% cut in their business this time, with clients replacing lavish, carefree spends with low-key affairs and pruned guest lists.

But it's not that easy. Sticking to a wedding budget involves a lot of leg work, especially if budget is playing on your mind. If you have a limited budget, but still want to have a grand wedding, here are a few ideas to help you cut corners without compromising on quality.

Book the right venue
Ragini Srivastava, Co-founder of wedding planning firm Doli Saja Ke Rakhna suggests, “Instead of an upscale hotel within the city, choose a venue in the outskirts to save on costs.” Wedding planners also suggest having the wedding celebrations during an offseason period, since hotels and banquets offer deep discounts during this time. Pratish Ambekar, Managing Director of iLeaf Ritz Banquets in Mumbai, says, “Having your wedding on a weekday instead of a weekend can also help you save a good deal.”

Look for a venue where you don’t have to mandatorily use their in-house vendors for decoration and catering services, as these tend to be more expensive. Srivastava says, “We recommend open ground venues to our clients since it gives them the liberty to work with preferred vendors, thus saving significantly on costs. Also, the tax component for 3 to 5-star hotel is higher at 35-40%, compared to open grounds, where it’s 10-15%.”

Go for desi cuisine
Food is one area where you can save a lot. Sachin Singhal, CEO of wedding portal Bandbaajaa. com suggests, “Avoid serving too many international items, as these increases the cost per plate. On average, hotels and banquets charge Rs 1,200 per plate for including international cuisine, whereas Indian cuisine costs only Rs 800 for each guest.”

Choose out-of-the-box décor Traditional decorations for a wedding venue can eat into your budget. Ambedkar says, “You can save by decorating your venue with lights and artificial flowers, instead of using fresh flowers and fabric.” You can also think out of the box and enlist the help of local craftsmen or use upcycled objects to add a quirky touch to your wedding décor for a fraction of the cost.

Get your outfit stitched or rent it
Another major expense is that of wedding outfits, which are only worn once, but can be very expensive. Srivastava says, “Some designers now offer buyback schemes for wedding dresses. Another pocket-friendly trend is that of choosing a design and getting the outfit tailored locally.” Hitesh Dharod, Proprietor of Popin Designer, a wedding-wear store, says, “ People are opening up to the idea of renting wedding clothes, which can help them save up to 60-70%.” The rentals start from around Rs 2,500 for a bridal lehenga or the groom’s sherwani. If the idea of renting your wedding outfit doesn’t seem too appealing, you can consider buying an ensemble, and then reselling it on one of the many available portals, after your wedding.

Rent jewellery instead of buying
Renting jewellery for wedding is an emerging trend. “Renting lets brides wear designer jewellery at just a fraction of cost. They can even browse around to find pieces that match their outfits perfectly,” says Taruna Biyani, Co-Founder of Rentjewels. “Renting jewellery can easily save you a couple of lakhs,” she adds. Bridal sets are available on rent for Rs 2,500- 15,000 from online portals.

Give traditional wedding cards a miss
Traditional wedding card invites are passé. Sumathy Bachchan, owner of wedding planning firm Wedding Sutras suggests, “Come up with ideas for creating personalised e-invites, or set up a wedding website or video that your guests can access. This way, you will save on the costs of printing and dispatching wedding cards.” If some of your relatives aren’t tech savvy enough to appreciate an e-invite, consider printing only a small number of wedding cards for them.

Capture precious moments for less
It’s very expensive to hire a renowned professional photographer to shoot your wedding photos and videos. Instead, look up small-time photographers and freelancers who can give you a much lower rate. Singhal adds, “You can also hire a photographer who is just starting out, after reviewing their work. Their services are more affordable, and they bring fresh ideas to the table”.

How you can save on wedding expenses
Doing your research and making a few small changes can help you save significantly on almost every aspect of your wedding budget.

The rise of micro weddings

Weddings today are an intimate affair. In the land of big, fat, Indian weddings, a sizeable number of couples are opting for an intimate experience, marked by simplicity. Why?
Because in the age of 24x7 visibility, bigger doesn’t always mean better. “Every aspect of our lives is so exposed to the rest of the world these days, courtesy social media, that an intimate, cosy setting seems more unique than the usual band, baaja baarat,” says Ravneet Gandhok, life coach.

Perks of an intimate fare

Most couples going the minimal way do not worry about size, scale — and most importantly — the drama. Planners say this is a growing tribe.
Ajay Modgil, wedding planner, feels size still matters but he gives his own ‘personalised’ twist. “Intimate weddings are little weddings with a big heart,” he says. One perk of a minimal wedding is more personalised social interaction with guests. It also a great way to keep every detail personalised. “You may have a shorter guest list but you can splurge on a customised décor element,” adds Modgil.

A rising tribe
Actor Neha Dhupia and Angad Bedi’s low-profile, surprise gurdwara wedding was one of many ceremonies that are dotting the Indian landscape. Actor Shweta Tripathi also had a micro wedding in a beautiful ceremony in Goa. Says wedding photographer Adusyanti Chatterjee, “Soon-to-be-married couples have realised that a wedding is about them, not everyone else. The social obligation of holding a grand wedding has nothing to do with actually building a couple’s relationship in the marriage. They want to do away with this symbolic obligation of adhering to conventions of ‘joining two families and holding a big fat wedding’,” she says.
Mind you, the band, baaja and tamasha isn’t missing completely but the scale is smaller.

Couples want to escape the pressure and fatigue that comes with planning a mega wedding, which they don’t get to enjoy. Says wedding planner Candice Pereira, “There’s no pressure to include traditions that have never resonated with couples. A small intimate affair with closest friends is in vogue.”

Nothing thrifty about it
Micro weddings aren’t necessarily about being thrifty. Says fashion designer Deepika Govind, “Recently, a bride had her wedding on an island in the Maldives, and the entire island had only the bride’s guests of 30-odd people.” Sometimes, couples go all out for a smaller number of guests. Since a lot of people are marrying at older ages than previous generations, they are often paying for all or most of the wedding themselves. The bride and groom really care about value and the experience of their wedding day.

Planning well still matters
Wedding planner Sonali Thakore has an advice for young couples planning a micro wedding, “A wedding is a wedding at the end of the day. In fact, since these are personalised affairs, more attention to details is needed by the bride and groom. They need to be involved in the process from the word go.”

Tips for a micro wedding
tip copyCustomised decor are in vogue

- Splurge on things you really love: be it flowers or food.
- Plan your guest list to include the very nearest and dearest.
- Splurge on special elements customised to your taste; things that wouldn’t be possible with a bigger budget.
- Play your kind of music.
- Take time to talk to your guests.
- Choose a destination or venue that is unique – mountain top, beach or a beautifully-decorated garden.
- Make guests participate in activities so that they feel involved and special.

Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone will be returning to Mumbai on November 18, and then, they will fly to Bengaluru for the November 21 reception which will be attended by a few family members and friends.

While the couple got hitched in Italy, Ranveer’s house in Mumbai was decorated beautifully to celebrate the union. In a report by Pinkvilla, the wedding planners revealed who did the decor for them, and they revealed that it was Ranveer Singh’s sister Ritika Bhavnani who was the brain behind this as she wanted to surprise her brother. Sahib Singh, the CEO and founder of the company said that they had been given the decor specifications by the family, Ranveer’s father Mr. Jagjeet Singh Bhavnani and sister Ritika as it was supposed to be a surprise for them. They customised the entire decor as per the likes of the family members. The brief given was pretty clear, classy and elegant.

Honouring both of their respective culture and traditions, Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh got married in two ways – one in Konkani traditional style and in another Sindhi traditional style. While for the Konkani style they had a pundit flown in from India, this is what they did for the Anand Karaj ceremony.

According to reports, for the Anand Karaj, a priest was flown all the way from Amritsar to Italy, and as the ritual goes, the ceremony is to take place at the Gurudwara. And hence, a makeshift Gurudwara was also built within the Villa for the Anand Karaj. The report further added that the Anand Karaj started off in the morning, and went on till the afternoon.

While the Konkani style wedding took place in a subtle and classy manner, for the Sindhi wedding, Ranveer Singh arrived in a boat along with his baaraat, giving it the classic Ranveer twist. The actor also apparently danced on his favourite Bollywood numbers in his baaraat.

For the Anand Karaj ceremony, the couple was seen dressed in red traditional attire and needless to say they looked absolutely stunning as bride and groom.

After a brief honeymoon, Deepika and Ranveer will reportedly host two receptions – one in Bengaluru for family and friends and one in Mumbai for their Bollywood pals.

The two took their nuptial vows at lake Como, Italy on November 14 and 15, in presence of only their families and close friends.

That would mean the couple is spending around Rs 1,73,25,000! Now that is something big!

We can imagine how lovely the video would be, but we are sure that it must have made DP rolling tears down her cheeks.

The wedding ceremonies kick-started yesterday but the world hasn't been able to witness it as the couple wanted their wedding to be an extremely private affair. We came to know that Ranveer Singh consoled his wife Deepika Padukone at the mehendi functions where the bride got emotional.

And soon, their families broke into a jig and the couple set the dance floor on fire with their performance.

However, reportedly owing to his work commitments he would not be able to make it to the wedding.

If reports are to be believed, then currently Rohit Shetty is busy with the post-production of ‘Simmba’. Slated to release on December 28, the movie stars Ranveer Singh and Sara Ali Khan. Besides, the director’s schedule is also tight because of a celebrity television reality show that he has been hosting for quite some time. Though Rohit would not be able to mark his presence in Italy, reports have it that the director will be attending the Mumbai reception of the couple on November 28.

In a two day ceremony, which will be happening on 14th and 15th of this month, Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh will be tying knots. The wedding will be followed by two receptions, first, the couple will be hosting the party in Deepika’s hometown Bengaluru on 21st November at The Leela, and then for the industry folks, the bash will be organized at The Grand Hyatt Hotel in Mumbai on 28th November.

The couple will be reportedly seen decked up in traditional attires with Sabyasachi signature touch. The marriage will be a completely private affair with only close friends and family. The guests have been requested not to bring any gift, but to donate to Deepika’s charity. Post wedding, Deepika-Ranveer will be landing in India on 18th, and then on 21st November, they will be hosting a reception at The Leela, Bangaluru, and on 28th November at The Grand Hyatt Hotel in Mumbai.

With just two days left for Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh’s big day, the preparations have caught all the more speed. Recently the reports of the duo donning a traditional attire were doing the rounds and now a new detail has come up. The buzz has it that Deepika and Ranveer have roped in The Wedding Filmer, a wedding filming company to capture the memories of their special day. It is the same wedding photographer who covered the special moments of Virat and Anushka’s wedding. There’s no second thought to the fact that the respective wedding photographer did give some awe-inspiring clicks from Virushka’s marriage that still tug at the heartstrings. So if these reports are to be believed, then soon we will be swooning on DeepVeer’s wedding moments.

Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh will be tying knots on 14th and 15th November. Their wedding ceremonies will have rituals and traditions of each Sindhi and Konkani families. Taking pride in the bride

Priyanka Chopra might not warrant a Statue of Unity just yet as a national icon, but she certainly did not deserve the 1,600 words of steaming hot xenophobia, racism and sexism that got heaped on her thanks to The Cut, a vertical owned by New York Magazine.

In the now infamous article, ‘Is Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’s Love for Real?’ (goo.gl/RPHTSX), columnist and comedian Mariah Smith decided, “All Nick wanted was a possible fling with Hollywood’s latest It Woman, but instead he wound up staring straight at a life sentence with a global scam artist.”

The backlash was quick and stinging. Within hours, the article was edited, toned down, its more egregious bits removed. Finally, it was deleted altogether, replaced by a cringing apology admitting “human error and poor judgement”, rather than the usual half-hearted“ Regret if this offended anyone” nonapology. This was no superficial paper cut. This ran deep.

Rudyard Kipling was wrong. Even if East is East and West is West, sometimes the twain do meet — at a lavish wedding in Jodhpur. Or, as this story revealed, they can meet in an apology at social media’s great judgement seat. It’s not quite an apology for Jallianwala Bagh or the Kohinoor, but it’s something.

When the West comes to India, it is usually the knight on a white horse bringing deliverance to hapless brown people. Nick the Knight did ride in on a horse, but this damsel was in no distress at all. According to Smith, Chopra “never even took the time to make sure [Jonas] was comfortable riding the horse”. Smith does not reveal how she knew this, but her advice to Jonas was to “find that horse and gallop away as fast as you can”. That’s a colonial stereotype turning on its head right there as Nick Jonas becomes the naïve virgin fleeing the clutches of the worldly-wise princess in this Cut-rate postcolonial fairy tale.

A Cut Below the Rest

There has been a lot of debate about whether Priyanka Chopra is India’s first bona fide crossover star. Whether her stint with Quantico was an unqualified success or not, the show was built around her. She was the face on the poster in the subway. The indignation this article sparked — and the quick capitulation by The Cut — proves her international clout is real, not just PR fantasy.

As Aseem Chhabra, author of Priyanka Chopra: The Incredible Story of a Global Bollywood Star, says, “She became a very recognisable American celebrity from somebody who was not known at all in America.” Not bad for the girl from Bareilly.

There were plenty of Indians rolling their eyes at the breathless coverage of the wedding. But with just one horrendous article, The Cut managed to make the entire conversation about their own racism, xenophobia, misogyny and ageism. As the Priyanka-Nick jokes being forwarded around on WhatsApp groups will testify, Indians are no strangers to these vices. But thanks to The Cut, Indians got to play aggrieved victim this time.

The wedding became a matter of national honour around which everyone rallied — even those who would otherwise have slammed it for being an over the-top brand-athon. Someone just give her a Padma Bhushan already.

The furore led to a larger conversation about The Cut’s editorial standards. The Cut claims to be a “premier destination for women with stylish minds”. But it came across as blindingly white, and blindsided by its whiteness. While Smith is African-American, the article showed how New York was still a little island that thought the world revolved around it. Smith was clueless that for most of the world, Priyanka Chopra, thanks to Bollywood and Quantico, was the bigger name, while Nick Jonas had to be Googled.

Most importantly, it took barely 12 hours for The Cut to axe the story. As the website Broadsheet points out (goo. gl/tyNri4), “There was a time when outrage in ‘distant’ India would barely make a dent on the New York media establishment. But today if media is global, so are the brands who finance it. No advertiser — either in New York or London or LA — wants to piss off one of the biggest markets in the world.”

Soft-Won Hard Victory

Of course, this is about business. But it is a sign of India’s soft power finally coming of age, and it’s thanks to Priyanka Chopra, rather than anyone going about hugging people across the world.

Chopra wisely chose not to lash out from her ‘happy place’. But to paraphrase former US president Theodore Roosevelt, it showed that real power means to speak softly and carry a big wedding veil. Better still, have six people carry it for you.
