Avoid stocks with higher PE and weak asset base

Avoid stocks with higher PE and weak asset base
“While the old generation keeps forgetting the bitter past, the new generation allows itself to become gullible!”
The broad Indian equity indices are at record high levels – sure, it is a part of a structural bull run. However, the current bull run raises doubts on some of “wealth creation stories”. A company with a debt of over Rs 3,500 crore, which is 150% of its annual sales seen its stock price moving up almost 3-fold in the last 52 weeks and trades at over 100 PE! Moreover, its reported inventories and receivables are about 250% of its half yearly sales!
Another company has reported receivables and inventories accounting for about 4.5 times its half yearly sales in September 2014. Further sales and debt are almost equal at around Rs 1,500 crore. It raises doubt about the viability of the business itself – still stock price remains firm post its results! Reliance Industries, a leader in the petrochemical business with an annual turnover of over Rs 4.5 lakh crore, trades around 10x FY2015 estimated earnings. However, many small chemical companies with a turnover of few hundred crore trade over 15-20 PE! Few chemical companies with MNC tag reporting losses also do not deter their market cap build-up!
ITC generates sales revenue of over Rs 36,000 crore and expects to report a net profit of over Rs 9,000 crore this year and trades around 25x FY2015 estimated earnings. However, there is a small consumer product company with a turnover of Rs.700 crore commands a marketcap of more than Rs 7,000 crore 10 times sales!) and enjoys PE multiple of more than 45! Of course, the equity markets love incremental growth of the businesses – but what is the limit to valuation premium one can offer to such growth stories with a low base? A company with just “a couple of crore rupees worth of tangible assets” creates ten-fold jump in its market-cap close to Rs 1,000 crore within 12 months – very “difficult” to understand such a “success story” with a weak asset base!
Then there are few companies which have promoters’ stake in single digit, but enjoying market cap to sales (not profits) ratio of 40 times!
“All is not well” with the entire corporate sector – over 3,000 companies have collectively reported just about 3% yoy sales growth in the September quarter. Even the Sensex companies, which are primarily large corporate, have reported a mere 6% yoy revenue growth in the September quarter. Every bull market witnesses thematic run up in the stock prices and post such bull runs, several stocks end up being quoted in single digits.
Bubbles in valuation never last for long – even in a structural bull run, when “smart” investors take out their “harvests” first, their prices would fall badly. It would be worth reading once again “A Short History of Financial Euphoria” by the Nobel laureate Kenneth Galbraith. “Investors’ memory is very short”, “while the old generation keeps forgetting the bitter past, the new generation allows itself to become gullible”.

You can give Kisan Vikas Patra a miss

You can give Kisan Vikas Patra a miss

P Chidambaram recently hailed a brickbat at the relaunch of discontinued investment instrument by the NDA saying, “The government’s ostensible purpose in relaunching the Kisan Vikas Patra (KVP) is to promote savings. The argument seems suspect, as there are other fixed-income instruments that offer better returns.”
Is it just a former finance minister trying to find faults with the new government? No, he seems to be correct.
The KVP in its new version will double investors’ money in 100 days and offer 8.7% returns if the holder sticks out for eight years and four months. One has the option to withdraw after the initial lock-in of two years and six months. But the withdrawal window would open only at intervals of six months.
The erstwhile denominations of Rs 100 have been done away with and now you can buy KVPs of Rs 1000, Rs 5,000, Rs 10,000 and Rs 50,000. Unlike the restriction of Rs 1.5 lakh applicable on PPF, there is no restriction on the upper limit of investment in KVP.
What’s more you can transfer these umpteen times and can shift between post offices. Soon you wouldn’t even have to head to a post office as public sector banks would be permitted to issue KVPs. There is limited clarity on whether one would have to submit a PAN card.
The bad news is there is no tax benefit at the time of investing and withdrawals are taxed too. Given this, the actual returns that one would get would be the only draw. Let’s weigh our options.
The Public Provident Fund too offers 8.7% interest per annum, but the biggest difference here is that the returns are tax-free at the time of withdrawal, apart from offering tax benefit at the time of investment.
If we were to take into account post-tax return of KVP at 10% tax bracket then the actual returns would be 7.8% and even lower at 6.01% for a person in the 30% tax bracket.
The 10-year national savings certificate offers 8.8% over a period of 10 years, where the post-tax returns would be close to that offered under the new KVP. But another strong contender in the fixed-income options is the traditional bank fixed deposit. Bank FDs offer 9-9.25% for the five to eight-year FDs. Reduced for taxes, they would still garner 8.5-6.3% returns.
Tax-free bonds too can be looked at by investors; these bonds issued last year by Hudco, REC, NHAI, etc have offered 24.5% over the issue price of Rs 5,000 even before completing a year. “Though one cannot purchase these bonds in the primary market, secondary market can be looked at, considering the yield to maturity of 7.3-7.7%,” says Vivek Damani, founder of financial advisory Jeevan Prabandhan.
One cannot directly place debt mutual funds against KVP, which offers a fixed return. However, the current interest rate scenario places longer-tenure debt funds in a sweet spot. “Directionally, bond yields will come down so a long-term debt fund is a better option to look at as there would be a surge in returns. They should not get into a gilt funds, as they may not be habituated to the volatility,” Damani says.

Gold’s glitter is for long term

Gold’s glitter is for long term
You can hedge your losses if risky assets in your portfolio run into trouble

It appears that gold may have lost its Midas touch, but that is only a blip. Gold will always be worth its weight in the long run and is a “must’’ in your portfolio, especially as a risk-averse hedge against other more riskier investments, according to experts.
Given the bearish outlook for the yellow metal, the question is whether or not one should invest in gold?
Up until 2013, gold was considered a safe bet as the precious metal had enjoyed a bull run for more than a decade. Gold prices increased from Rs 6,250 per 10 gram on commodity bourse MCX in January 2004 to Rs 35,074 per 10 gram in MCX in August 2013. But the subsequent crash in prices bust the “safe haven’’ myth.
Despite this, experts feel gold is still the best bet as a risk averse investment. “It’s a must in your portfolio. Think of it as an insurance,’’ says Naveen Mathur, associate director, commodities and currencies, Angel Broking.
For instance, at present, the equity markets are on an upswing and gold may appear to have lost its sheen. “If the markets are in trouble, then the risky assets may not perform greatly. But you can hedge your losses with gold in your portfolio,’’ says Mathur.
Gold is still seen as safest asset with the lowest risk when compared with other investments. “The `low-to-negligible’ co-relation with other asset classes like equities and debt provides gold a characteristic of an anchor even when the other two assets may not be performing well. Thus, gold helps stabilise the overall portfolio and provides a possibility of growth even in a recessionary environment,’’ says Lakshmi Iyer, chief investment officer (CIO) (debt) & head products, Kotak Mutual Fund.
Investors who have been waiting for a drop in prices should keep in mind that gold prices could firm up in the coming days. Following the jump in gold imports and a widening current account deficit, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is said to be looking at imposing curbs on imports.
The import curbs coupled with the domestic demand for occasions like weddings could lead to a marginal increase in prices. “Looking ahead, while (international) prices stay below $1,200 the broad sentiments are on the downside, but bargain buying and probable demand from India is likely to take prices higher. In the domestic market, a mild positive move to Rs 27,300 per 10 gram is anticipated initially, which if broken would take prices higher towards Rs 28,000 levels later,’’ says Hareesh V, research head / senior analyst, GeojitComtrade Ltd.
The best investment strategy for investments in gold is a “staggered approach’’ with regular purchases of small quantities as it helps to average out the cost. For best results, gold should comprise 10 to 20% of your portfolio, say experts.
“Gold has intrinsic value. So anytime is a good time to purchase gold,’’ feels Mr C K Venkataraman, CEO, jewellery division, Titan Company.
And now that you may have made up your mind to invest in gold, you could invest in either physical gold, that is, gold jewellery, gold coins or bars or Gold ETFs (exchange traded funds).
“If you are buying gold purely as an investment, then it is better if you invest in gold ETFs rather than physical gold,’’ advises Mathur. The advantages are that physical gold involves the risk of theft and misplacement and you could be cheated on the price by your jeweller. The ETFs are safer as you can buy and sell them on exchanges and do not have to incur charges for safe keeping say locker or 0insurance charges or making charges in case of jewellery.

A wedding is an exceptional event and deserves to be an incomparable affair. Goa provides exactly that.“
Major components of a destination wedding in Goa:
Venue and decoration
There is a wide variety of venues ranging from five-star luxury hotels, beach destinations, independent venues in the form of sea-facing lawns, beautifully decorated homes, semi-private beach areas and indoor banquet halls. Each choice comes with various possibilities of decoration, light effects and creative themes comprising: decorated mandaps, floral arrangements, stages, backdrops, illuminated hallways, table decorations, props, linen and well-dressed chairs. A rough cost estimate would be between Rs 40,000 to Rs 2 lakh per day.

Goa is a land of variety in entertainment. You can choose from celebrity DJs, Bollywood performers, local folk dances and bands, belly dancers, African acrobats and ghazal singers. The choice of show and duration determines the price. Show prices range from Rs 20,000 to Rs 70,000 per show.
Photography
Immense local talent, specialising in videography and still photography is found in Goa.Moreover, the destination itself adds to the charm in cinematography.
Transportation
Generally hotels have their own transport facilities at reasonable costs. Also, rental vehicles are conveniently available.
The flair
Goa is a culmination of varied cultures. A wedding procession (baraat), ranging from a Portuguese stylised setup, a beach wedding theme, a palanquin procession, a vintage car procession or the groom entering on a horse elephant, creativity at its best is offered here.
Jaco le Roux, general manager, The Grand Hyatt, Goa, says, “People from Western countries are largely fascinated with the idea of getting married in Goa, which is a prominent tourist destination. There is no specific pattern as concerns a wedding arrangement. It certainly varies as per the preferences of the families concerned and the number of guests attending the event.People from the West prefer a destination wedding in Goa as it provides fairytale venues. Moreover, it is affordable and provides a unique experience worth sharing with generations to come.“
And more importantly, as Arondekar adds that there is always something for everyone in Goa. Contrary to the belief that destination weddings can be enjoyed only by a privileged few, Goa offers the experience suiting every budget.

The significance of numerology

The significance of numerology

While William Shakespeare immortalised the phrase, `What's in a name?', Bollywood stars, socialites and even the common man have turned their nose on the bard and are queuing up to add and subtract letters from their names -all to bring a dose of good luck into their lives. Astrologer, numerologist, graphologist and gemmologist Bhavikk Sangghvi helps you do just that. Here he answers some questions related to numerology ...

What is the most powerful thing about numerology?
I would say its simplicity to imply . Just adding or subtracting an alphabet in your name, company or film title and suggesting the right gemstone can fetch fascinating results in a short span of time.

What would you say your USP is?
Although it's a proven science, your entire life cannot depend just on numerology .The art of mixing astrology and numerology helps bring you close to knowing your future. However, having said that, it is not a substitute for hard-work and honesty . Also, myths like certain numbers like 4 and 8 are `unlucky' is simply a superstition in peo ple's minds, which has been unfortunately created by some so-called experts.
There's no truth in it. So, it's best to consult a professional before blindly following any generic tips because what works for others may not work for you and vice versa.

romance novel A Passionaate Gospel of True Love author Poonaam Uppal

THE TWIN SOUL PHENOMENON

Through her romance novel A Passionaate Gospel of True Love author Poonaam Uppal introduces readers to a different level of consciousness. When two people meet for the first time, they enter into an exalted state of consciousness or the `bubble love' state. This state can last for days or in some cases, months. This euphoric mystical experience is unique and is a bonafide twin soul connect or a twin soul meeting, says Poonam, who reveals more about her book...

What is the message of your book?
This mystical true love story is an occult message from the beyond and urges humans to search for their twin soul, split half and create the holy Kama Sutra before it is too late.

What exactly is a twin soul?
A twin soul is an established fact in the Vedas. The belief is that in the beginning a soul was created as one -a unity of both male and female. It is then split into two opposite halves and both wander the earth in an eternal search for the other. Twin souls will be drawn towards each other by the cord of memory that con nects them. It is a search through many lifetimes, perhaps the twin soul concept can only now, in this Aquarius Era, gain knowledge, as humans have entered a higher level of consciousness.

How will one know whether they've met their twin soul?
There is a deep, overpowering inner knowing. As soon as twin souls first meet, the love between them is intense. This feeling dismisses all logic and everything perceived as `normal'. When you meet your twin soul or true love, you will feel a strong sense of unity .You feel energy `dancing' between the two of you and have a mission together in this life.

How can one find their true lover, twin soul and split half?
One needs to read my book for that! Or visit the Poonaam Uppal Facebook page where I regularly connect with readers.

WHY IS PREMARITAL BLOOD TESTING SO IMPORTANT?

Compatibility testing gets a health twist

Young couples are not only checking compatibility on emotional levels, but also on health grounds to avoid complications in the future

While a lot has already been said and analysed about premarital blood tests, city youngsters, on the threshold of tying the knot , are increasingly opting for it to ensure a safe future. However, there are some, who are against the idea of getting blood tested before married.
Health professional, Dr Amita Kaur is completely in favour of a prospective bride and groom getting a blood test done before marriage.“There is nothing wrong in getting yourself checked biologically before marriage. It actually helps in preventing a lot of health complications that may arise in future. While certain things cannot be predicted, a general idea on whether the couples' blood group match or whether they are biologically compatible ensures a safe future,“ she elaborates.

WHY IS PREMARITAL BLOOD TESTING SO IMPORTANT?
A premarital blood test basically checks for syphilis (a sexually transmitted infection, which is highly contagious) and rubella (German measles). Further, the blood test also looks out for diseases such as tuberculosis, gonorrhea (sexually transmitted disease) and HIV . Dr N Biswas, general physician, says, “Besides helping the couple take precaution if any of the infection is detected, a premarital blood testing also helps them decide to go ahead with their marriage based on biological compatiblity .“

THERE ARE MORE TAKERS FOR THE PROCEDURE TODAY
Says Dr Varkha Chulani, clinical psychologist and psychotherapist, “Not many youngsters in India in the past knew about the importance of blood testing before marriage. However, with time and aware ness about it, youngsters, today , insist on getting a premarital blood testing done to rule out any improbabilities.“

HELPS TO IDENTIFY POTENTIAL PROBLEMS
The debate on the merits of premarital blood test has been an endless one.Nupur Dwivedi*, a 27-year-old marketing professional says, “When my marriage got fixed last month, my inlaws suggested that I go in for a blood test along with my husband. Initially , it came to me as a surprise that they wanted me to go in for a blood test, but on reading and researching about premarital blood testing, I figured out that it is a good idea and can prevent a lot of health-related problems that may arise later.“

THE NAYSAYERS...
Thirty-one-year-old Krupa Mehta*, who is tying the knot early next year, feels that a premarital blood testing denotes that a lack of trust and faith in the relationship. She says, “I don't think it is a good idea to get premarital blood testing done. What are you trying to prove any which way?
Compatibility between couples should only be that of the mind, and not just health.“

Malayalee Wedding Rituals

Malayalee weddings are short and simple contradicting the common statement which usually describes Indian weddings as – “Big Fat Indian Weddings”.  Malayalee weddings are a true delight to the eyes and very impressive.

Malayalee wedding rituals

Pre Wedding Rituals

Muhurtham: The first ritual is to match the horoscope of the bride and the groom and to fix on an auspicious time for the engagement and for the wedding known as muhurtham based on the horoscope.  This is usually done by a family astrologer.

Nischayam: This is the engagement ceremony and usually takes place at the bride’s home. This is a small affair and takes place amidst family members and close relatives. This ceremony, formally confirms the marriage. The couple exchange rings during this ceremony and the ceremony is followed by a lavish feast with traditional mouthwatering delicacies.

Traditional feast and visit to temple: This ritual takes place a day prior to the wedding where traditional food is served to all guests at the bride’s home. The bride has to sit facing the East and is also served a five course vegetarian fare. Post this the bride is accompanied by her family to a nearby temple where she offers prayers to the god and seeks blessings from all the elders present.  These rituals are similarly conducted at the groom’s home too.

Wedding Rituals

Seeking Blessings:
Before arriving at the venue, the bride and the groom have to seek blessings from all the elders at their respective homes. The bride’s friends assist her in getting ready. The bride usually wears a two piece saree known as a set saree.

Her hair is adorned with fresh jasmine flowers and wears a lot or gold ornaments. The groom on the other hand is dressed in a simple dhoti and a plain white silk shirt. Malayalee grooms also wear a lot of gold jewellery like rings, bracelets and chains.

Welcoming the Groom:  The groom is welcomed by the bride’s family to the beats of traditional music. The music is played as a gesture of welcoming the groom and his family. The bride’s brother welcomes the groom by washing his feet at the doorstep. The groom responds to this gesture by gifting the brother something usually made of gold. There after the groom proceeds to the mandap accompanied by his relatives. He sits next to his bride in the mandap who is already present there after making three rounds around the mandap.

Wedding Ceremony: The wedding ceremony is called veil. This is conducted by the priest. The groom ties a mangalsutra known as “thaali” in Malayalam round the bride’s neck during the muhurtham. The couple then exchanges garlands and this ritual is followed by Kanyadaan. This ritual is conducted by the bride’s father. The father of the bride places the bride’s hand over the groom’s hand. This signifies that he has now handed his daughter over to the groom.  The couple then circles the mandap thrice and the groom then applies vermillion on the bride’s forehead at the parting of her hair. The bride then applies sandalwood paste on the groom’s forehead and the couple seek blessing from their parents. The wedding ceremony is followed by a lavish meal hosted by the bride’s family.

Post Wedding Rituals

Reception: This is usually hosted by the groom’s family. The bride is introduced to friends and extended family members at the reception.

Grihapravesham: This ritual marks the entry of the bride in her new house. The bride is welcomed by the maternal sister of the groom. She welcomes her with an aarti performed using a traditional lamp which she then hands over to the bride. The bride walks into her new house holding the burning lamp in her hand. The bride and groom are then offered a mixture of sweetened milk and banana.

Visiting the bride’s home: A day after the wedding the bride and the groom along with a few of the groom’s relatives, visit the bride’s home. A lavish feast is arranged for them. The bride and the groom then pay a visit to both their close relatives to formally introduce each other.

Maharashtrian Wedding Rituals

Maharashtrian Wedding Rituals

Maharashtrian Bride
Among the many kinds of Indian weddings, Maharashtrian weddings often tend to be less lavish but just as beautiful. However, like many Hindu weddings, a Maharashtrian wedding also comprises of a mix of pre wedding, wedding day and post wedding rituals. The weddings are normally held during the day and people often find the appropriate mahurat for the wedding ceremony. Although the rituals and customs may vary, these are some of the more commonly followed Maharashtrian wedding rituals:

Maharashtrian Sakharpuda

Sakhar Puda- It all starts with the Sakhar Puda (sakhar meaning sugar, puda meaning packet) or the engagement, where the families exchange a decorated packet of sugar or sweets like pedhas, once the marriage is fixed. The maharashtrian bride is also given sarees and green glass bangles by her in-laws. Sometimes the couple exchange rings too. Traditionally the families wait to print and send the wedding invites only after the sakhar puda.

Kelvan – Normally a couple of days before the wedding day, there is a big meal organized for the bride and groom in their houses respectively, attended by all the close relatives.
Maharashtrian Haldi Ceremony

Halad Chadawat – The Maharashtrian haldi ceremony is traditionally held the day before the wedding or on the wedding day preceding the ceremonial bathing. The halad or turmeric is ground and made into a paste, which is then applied with mango leaves on the bride’s skin. The groom’s family has a similar function at their home. Sometimes the groom’s leftover turmeric paste from is taken to the bride’s house.

Ganpati Puja – On the day of the ceremony, prayers to Lord Ganesha are conducted to bless the occasion and to ensure that the wedding goes off without a hitch.

Seemant Puja – The groom and the baraat are welcomed at the wedding venue with a seemant (meaning boundary) puja. Traditionally it used to take place when the groom and his entourage entered the bride’s village. The groom’s feet are washed and he receives gifts from his in-laws. The bride’s mother also does his aarti.

Gaurihar/Gowrihar Puja – Dressed up in a yellow saree (normally given by a maternal uncle) with her bridal jewellery and makeup the bride sits before an idol of Parvati. She is supposed to pray to the Goddess Anapurna.

Wedding Ceremony / Lagna – The bride is escorted to the lagna mandap by her maternal uncle. Both the bride and the groom wear the mundavalya on their heads (strings of pearls, flowers etc.) and are separated by an antarpat i.e. screen made of cloth. After chanting prayers and shlokas the antarpat is removed and the couple is showered with akshata or unbroken rice grains and garlands are exchanged. After the kanyadan and the tying of the mangalsutra, the couple takes the seven steps near the holy fire. The ceremony is usually followed by a lunch or wedding reception.

Varat – The varat is the emotion charged ending where the bride bids her family goodbye and leaves for her groom’s house amidst fanfare.

Grihapravesh – The bride enters her new home and is welcomed by her mother-in-law with an aarti. She then gently knocks over a vessel filled with rice at the doorstep, symbolizing the luck and prosperity she is bringing into the house.
