WHY IS PREMARITAL BLOOD TESTING SO IMPORTANT?

Compatibility testing gets a health twist


Young couples are not only checking compatibility on emotional levels, but also on health grounds to avoid complications in the future 
 
While a lot has already been said and analysed about premarital blood tests, city youngsters, on the threshold of tying the knot , are increasingly opting for it to ensure a safe future. However, there are some, who are against the idea of getting blood tested before married.
Health professional, Dr Amita Kaur is completely in favour of a prospective bride and groom getting a blood test done before marriage.“There is nothing wrong in getting yourself checked biologically before marriage. It actually helps in preventing a lot of health complications that may arise in future. While certain things cannot be predicted, a general idea on whether the couples' blood group match or whether they are biologically compatible ensures a safe future,“ she elaborates.

WHY IS PREMARITAL BLOOD TESTING SO IMPORTANT?
A premarital blood test basically checks for syphilis (a sexually transmitted infection, which is highly contagious) and rubella (German measles). Further, the blood test also looks out for diseases such as tuberculosis, gonorrhea (sexually transmitted disease) and HIV . Dr N Biswas, general physician, says, “Besides helping the couple take precaution if any of the infection is detected, a premarital blood testing also helps them decide to go ahead with their marriage based on biological compatiblity .“

THERE ARE MORE TAKERS FOR THE PROCEDURE TODAY
Says Dr Varkha Chulani, clinical psychologist and psychotherapist, “Not many youngsters in India in the past knew about the importance of blood testing before marriage. However, with time and aware ness about it, youngsters, today , insist on getting a premarital blood testing done to rule out any improbabilities.“

HELPS TO IDENTIFY POTENTIAL PROBLEMS
The debate on the merits of premarital blood test has been an endless one.Nupur Dwivedi*, a 27-year-old marketing professional says, “When my marriage got fixed last month, my inlaws suggested that I go in for a blood test along with my husband. Initially , it came to me as a surprise that they wanted me to go in for a blood test, but on reading and researching about premarital blood testing, I figured out that it is a good idea and can prevent a lot of health-related problems that may arise later.“

THE NAYSAYERS...
Thirty-one-year-old Krupa Mehta*, who is tying the knot early next year, feels that a premarital blood testing denotes that a lack of trust and faith in the relationship. She says, “I don't think it is a good idea to get premarital blood testing done. What are you trying to prove any which way?
Compatibility between couples should only be that of the mind, and not just health.“
