It is believed that Dhanteras puja is performed usually during the Pradosh Kaal when the Sthir Lagna prevails. Sthir means not moveable. It is said that if the puja is done during this time, Goddess Lakshmiji will stay in your house. Also, a diya is lit by devotees and placed outside their home to ward off evils and bring good luck and prosperity into the house.
