Naropa Festival to be held in Ladakh in September



Naropa Festival, one of the biggest and most prominent Buddhist festivals in the world, will be held in Ladakh from September 16 to 20. Attracting tourists from all over the world, the festival will be celebrated at the Hemis Monastery, the seat of the Drukpa Order, in Ladakh.

Naropa heralded the beginning of a rich tradition in Buddhist philosophy. His legacy and lessons traversed the Himalayas and shaped the identity and culture of many people and it continues to have an impact in the modern world. His life is upheld as an example of determination, perseverance and endurance. His teachings of the six yogas of Naropa are the fundamental pillars of the Himalayan Buddhist tradition. His legacy of experiential learning and active compassion helped civilisation flourish beyond India and its neighbouring countries.


The festival includes an elaborate ceremony where an ornament of Saint Naropa along with a set of ancient precious relics will be unveiled. The programme will also include a display of the silk embroidery of Buddha Amitabha, a musical concert by Bollywood as well as local artists and cultural and traditional dances of Ladakh.

Ladakh is the highest plateau in Kashmir

Ladakh is the highest plateau of Kashmir with much of it being over 3,000 meters. It extends from the Himalayas to the Kunlun Ranges and includes the upper Indus River valley. The Pangong Lake is one of the most visited high grassland lakes there. It got its name because Pangong Tso means ‘high grassland lake’ in Tibetan language. Pangong Lake is an endorheic lake situated at a height of 4,350 meters. During winter the lake freezes completely, despite being a salt lake. The area is also home to several beautiful monasteries such as Hemis Gompa, Thiksey Gompa and Shey Palace. Although Ladakh is a desert, it is still boasts of over 225 species of birds such as finches, robins, redstarts and hoopoe.
